Maquette-Workshop summer 2013

The first thing you need is a sketch of a character in order to create a maquette.
Imagine your character from each side and make some sketches.

Then you create a rough framework of wire and aluminum foil.
You can take a small wooden block as a pad. Make sure that it is stable.

"SuperSculpey"is a great material for sculpting.
It makes it easier splitting the material into small pieces and forming it to slim long worms before working with it.
Then you wrap the malleable material around the aluminum figure.

Use different kinds of wooden or metallic tools to work out the shapes and details of your character.
Shape and form are important first. Do not loose yourself in details at the beginning.

The material gets solid after baking (one hour at 130° (celsius)).

Finally you paint it with acrylic colors...

This work has given me so much joy.
It not only looks great, but also helps to better understand and visualize the figure.
You can imagine how the character moves and the way he talks.
I have built a close relationship to my character during the working process...
